Cathedral Rock Hike - Sedona

The Cathedral Rock trailhead can be reached via the Back O’ Beyond road.

From the I179 South you will pass through the village of Oak Creek.  At the roundabout turn left onto Back O’Beyond road.  The road winds it’s way down passed beautiful Sedona homes to a parking lot on your left.  There are limited spaces to park so make sure you get there early as the spaces fill quickly.  You will need to buy a day parking pass for $5 which can either be purchased at the parking lot or from the Sedona Chamber of Commerce. The pass can be used to park at any of the various trailheads throughout Sedona.  This pass however cannot be used at the state parks where an entrance fee is required.  Make sure that you buy the ticket as the parking fines are steep.

The Cathedral rock trail is short at 0.6 miles one way and the elevation gained is about 600ft.  The hike starts out from the parking lot, taking you across the creek bed, between trees and flowers of various colors. The trail is easy to follow and is a moderate uphill climb for the first part leading you to an area of stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The second part of the trail is more challenging and perhaps not recommended for small children or those with a fear of heights. The trail from here is marked with cairns to help you easily navigate your way.  A section requires a steep climb up some rocks that look more challenging than they actually are.

The view you are rewarded at the end of the trail is spectacular and well worth the effort. From here you can see the verde valley, Mingus Mountain and Jerome some 30 miles away.

Bring sturdy shoes, drinking water and a camera and you will have a very enjoyable and memorable hike.
