Kodaikanal

 Kodaikanal India.

I took a long journey, winding through narrow roads across the state of Tamil Nadu in India a few years back.

First passing the dry grasslands and then shady forests that huddle along damp ravines, I met the base of the lush Palani Hills. Climbing up the narrow pass of the mountain I had to smile at the curious monkeys sitting at the roadside watching the bus drive past as it made its steady climb to an elevation of 7, 200ft.

I arrived in Kodaikanal by late afternoon.  A nice change from the otherwise tropical climate of southern India, I found pleasure in finally wearing a long sleeved sweater.  The hill station of Kodaikanl was first settled by Americans, which was apparent by the towns architecture and mainly Christian faith. Pleasing to the eye, a small lake marks the peaceful town center where many locals often ride bicycles around the well paved roads. Paddleboats and horses are available to rent and personal guides are not hard to find on the spot, as the small yet friendly village is acute to tourism. A trekking tour is probably one of the best ways to fully appreciate all the numerous vantage points of this magical hill town that is still little known to the western world.
