It was December on the eve of the millennium when I visited the small Mexican fishing village of Puerto Morelos.
This was before the completion of the nearby mega resort community of Playa del Carmen, little sister to the exotic Yucatan Peninsula’s party city Cancun. At the time, not much was known of the sleepy coastal community of Puerto Morelos, complete with beach huts, bungalows and campsites.
I remember riding my bike along the beach, my red dress flapping beneath the warm Caribbean breeze. Turquoise waves crash upon an ivory sand shoreline, parrot fish scramble beneath the coral garden just beyond the break.
The sun dipped behind palm groves that night and I joined a new year bash in the town square. The local talent took center stage and enthusiastically played the same ten tracks all night and on through the morning sunrise.
True to the vibe of Puerto Morelos, I partied with the fishermen, the cocineros, the bartenders, brothers and sisters because when in Puerto Morelos not only did I feel welcomed, but welcomed as if by my own family.
